According to Sandra Maria de Lima, teacher at the IFMT (Federal Institute of Education, Science and Tecnology) of Mato Grosso, Brazil, yes, the water that comes out of the air conditioner is drinkable, based on her research.

The research was made in 2015 in a public school at Mato Grosso and consisted in capting water that came out of a 24.000 BTUs split, six months after the last maintenance.

It was verified that the water had magnesium, calcium and other substances considered satisfying for consumption by the Ministry of Health. But, before being drank, the water had to pass through a chlorine addition process, to eliminate the dirt and bacteria.

Sandra’s idea is to create a mechanism that allows the students of the classroom to drink the water. That would highly increase the water saving of the school, since an air conditioner can eliminate from 2 to 4 liters of water per hour. Not mentioning the contribution to the environment.

This water is too good to be thrown away and not drank. We want, with a drain, to feed a reservoir and in it put chlorine in the water. After that, part of the water would be consumed, and the rest would go to a nebulizer to humidify the environment!

But, besides the optimism of the research, the teacher says that it still isn’t possible to release the consumption of water from any device until the research is authorized by the Federal Government an by the National Board of Environment. After all, this is the first research of this kind in this subject.

The project can take from 1 to 3 years to be released after approval, due to the amount of laws involved in the subject. But the process, according to the teacher, is already used by people that capture water from artesian wells and get chlorine for free at the Health Centers.

We can say that Sandra’s idea is really good, specially at this moment of world crisis that we are living, both in environmental and economical aspects.

To preserve the environment or spending less money with water, would be good if we could have this resource available in our homes.
